Journal Writing – Its Benefits to Writers

Journal writing has always been encouraged by both educators and health practitioners – educators because it is the best way to record thoughts and experiences, and health practitioners because it helps in reducing stress, and as a result improve general health. For a writer, I think both the reasons apply – plus a lot more. Why, you may ask. The reason is simple. For a writer, its benefits are many more.  

First of alwrite4l, what is a journal? There are several different kinds of journals, but here we are talking about personal journals. These are recordings of daily experiences, personal thoughts, insights into things or people, or even conversations with yourself, which you write on a regular basis. Now how can these recordings help a writer? What are the benefits of journal writing to a writer? Here are some of them:

  • It is writing practice – Since you are writing something every day, the writing process is continuous – it keeps your ideas and language flowing. The daily experiences are different, and the daily moods vary, so naturally what you write and how you write will also vary. This will bring variety to your writings.
  • It helps in remembering things – Writers usually base their writings on their personal experiences. Your journal has all your experiences and thoughts written down, so when you are stuck, or are short on ideas, you can always get back to your journal to refresh your mind. In a way, you can say your journal is a treasure trove of ideas. It prevents writer’s block and helps in brainstorming.
  • It helps in self-improvement – When you write your journal, you write on the day you experience something – whether it is an event, a feeling, or a thought. So, at that time, you are emotionally involved in the writing and you rarely stop to think. When you read this very same thing at a later date, you read it objectively. As a result, you become your own critic and can easily identify your weaknesses and the areas where you need improvement.
  • It makes you more observant and enable you to understand things better – When you write your observations, thoughts, and feelings on a regular basis, you start understanding them more. You start understanding the hows and the whys, giving you better insight into things – a very important characteristic of a good writer.
  • Your journal can one day be published as your memoirs.
